Take Action for Heart Week
(April 28 - May 4, 2002)

During Heart Week 2002 the East Grampians Health Service and the Ararat Heartbeat Support Group invite the local community to join them for a walk to encourage Heart Health.

Sue Cashin, Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator at the East Grampians Health Service, said a walk will be held on Monday 29 April commencing at 10am at the Alexandra Gardens in Ararat.

"The Ararat Heartbeat Group has been meeting every Monday since 1995 at the Gardens to enjoy a morning walk," Ms Cashin said.

Ms Cashin went on to say that being physically active is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. "Young or old, physical activity brings with it a range of significant benefits," she said. "And the good news is activity doesn't have to be vigorous - moderate activity, such as brisk walking, is great for your health."

"To reduce the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle," Ms Cashin said. "This involves healthy eating, being physically active and smoke-free."

Ms Cashin went on to say that after the walk the Dietitian, Quit Facilitator, Counsellor and members of the Heartbeat Support Group will be available to provide support and information about positive ways to enhance heart health. Refreshments will be available at the Community Health Centre.
