Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) Redesign Demonstration Project
Grampians Region
“Early in Life, Early in Illness and Early in Episode”
Emerging from the Mental Health Reform Strategy 2009-2019, Because Mental Health Matters, the Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) Redesign Demonstration Project is one of two state demonstration projects funded by Department of Health, Mental Health, Drugs and Regions Division. The project is supported by 16 Consortium member agencies along with a growing network of partners across clinical and non-clinical sectors.
The focus of the project is on early intervention and aims to achieve systematic change across a number of sectors including mental health, primary care, education, family and welfare services, alcohol and other drug services, early childhood development and youth specific services.
To operationalise this aim, key reform areas have been devised. Previous reform has often occurred on an ad hoc basis that has not enabled change to be sustained. The Grampians project has adopted a considered approach and will implement a sequential process to provide greater opportunity for sustainable reform.
The Grampians Reform Action Plan 2011-2012 incorporates nine reform action areas:
- Ballarat Health Service-Mental Health Service Internal Redesign
- Secondary Consultation Model
- Interagency Service Coordination
- Extension of CAST to kindergartens
- Establish Complex Behaviour & Learning Difficulties Team
- Cross-sectoral Workforce Development
- Community Consultation
- Partnerships
- Research & Evaluation
A project newsletter is produced regularly to provide ongoing updates. Further information can be obtained from the Project Manager (5320 3047) or Research Officer (5320 3060).

CYMHS Youth "Be Heard" Survey
The Child and Youth Mental Health Services Redesign Project are working towards achieving systemic change in Mental Health for Children and Youth across the Grampians Region. The project aims to focus on early intervention that will progress a range of reforms in line with the “Because Mental Health Matters 2009-2011.
This survey will enable Children and Youth up to 25 years to have their say about their experiences accessing Mental Health Services and this information will then form the basis of a Regional Youth Participation Plan. This plan will be used to implement an Engagement program that will roll out across the Grampians Region in 2012.
